Violet Park has grassy areas, a rocky outcrop, a sand pitch, a local sports ground and a temporary kindergarten. The park is located in the north-eastern part of Hermann, close to the Hermann waterfront road and Vellamonokatu. The temporary pavilion day nursery in Violan Park was built on the Violan Park sports field. The construction of the kindergarten started in autumn 2018 and it opened in early March 2019. The construction of the kindergarten and the building site were heavily contested and the neighbourhood appealed to the Administrative Court. It is a temporary kindergarten for more than 100 children. The Violet Park was found [...]

Oihonnankatu is a street that used to run through the Hermann district, but no longer exists. Oihonnankatu was named after the passenger ship S/S Oihonna, built in 1898 for Suomen Höyrylaiva Oy. Oihonna was originally a character in Runeberg's poem Fjalar.
The other end of the street was roughly at the current Vega Street 12 and the other end on Hämeentie at the beginning of the current viaduct and close to Hämeentie 103:a. The street ran through the current Violet Park on the west side and across Haukilahdenkatu. The street was about 600 metres long.
Hackzell and Toppari (1991) write that for old Helsinkians, Oihonnankatu was the most authentic Hermann: wooden houses stubbornly holding on to the new stone houses, leaning plank fences, fluttering yard laundry.
The street can be found on the City of Helsinki map service (map.hel.fi) from historical data. Oihonnankatu is very visible on maps from the 1940s and earlier, but in the 1950s and 1960s it has shrunk to a short stretch and in the 1970s it no longer appears at all.

Vega Street 12
Vegankatu 12 on vuonna 1960 valmistunut asuintalo, jonka on suunnitellut Terttu Mehto.
The small park at the intersection of Vellamonkatu and Haukilahdenkatu is a riot of colour, especially when it's getting dark. The park is crossed by a footpath, which serves as a beautiful oak path. Maples and birches grow in the park. In 2008-2009, the Helsinki City Transport Authority (HKL) planned a large underground tram depot in Vallila. The second ramp (exit) of the cave would have been at the intersection of Haukilahdenkatu and Vellamonkatu, where the park is located. Below is VK Group's observation photo of the ramp. The project received a lot of [...]
